Perama cave

On the northwestern edge of Pamvotida Lake, just 5 km away from Ioannina, in the settlement of Perama (19, Spilaiou street), rises the limestone hill Goritsa (peak height 555 m). In its bowels about two million years ago, a labyrinthine cave was formed through complex natural processes. In its chambers and corridors, various stalagmite and stalactite cave themes develop. Bones and teeth from archaic cave bear species indicate that such large, extinct mammals found shelter there 200,000 years ago. At an unknown time the cave was "sealed" due to precipitations.

In modern times, the cave was accidentally found by locals. In the 1950s it was explored by pioneer speleologists, Mr. and Mrs. Ioannins  and Anna Petrocheilou. It is the first cave tourist attraction in Greece.

The visitable and accessible route, accompanied by a guide, has a length of 1,100 m. The temperature inside the cave is stable (18o C). At the entrance of the settlement there is a Tourist Information Centre.
